Anna Haifisch

Hi! I’m Anna Haifisch from Leipzig, Germany. I’m 26 years old and draw “The Buddies” and other things.

When did you decide you wanted to be illustrator?
I think I made the decision to be an illustrator in the age of 14 because I always liked drawing and was reading lots of comics . When I was 18 I applied for the local art school and was pretty happy there for 7 years.

Would you recommend studying at art school?
A big yes for the people you meet there and become friends with.
& for plenty of time to spent on drawing and printing.

How long was it before illustration became your primary form of income?
After I graduated in 2011 I worked half a year almost full time at a stupid warehouse to get money. I hated it and the people there so I knew that I have to make money  with drawings asap to not lose time with annoying things. Since a year illustration is my income. But I don’t feel very save yet.

Could you describe your typical day?
There’s no routine at all. I just know that my best working hours are from late afternoon until open end. The early worm is not my worm.
I always like to go to the post office in the middle of the day to mail some stuff off.

What do you wish you’d know when you first started out?
I’m glad I barely knew anything. It would have been too depressing I think.

What’s the best thing about being an illustrator?
I think drawing is the coolest thing in the world.

What’s the worst thing about being an illustrator?
Horrible people who want me to draw ugly stuff.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
I would like to be a writer. It would be cool to write short stories.

Any other tips you could share?
It’s important to go to (punk) rock shows from time to time.
also good: Playing ping pong (but that’s not mandatory)
