I am 31 year old, live in Kyoto, Japan. I graduated from Kyoto Institute of Technology. My major was designing.
Live with my wife, no child.

When did you decide you wanted to be illustrator?
When I was junior at college.
It was necessary to make art project which is done in place of a graduation thesis.
But my professor made it unnecessary for me, i.e., they regarded my exhibitions before graduation as the project..

Would you recommend studying at art school?
It depends on the person and school.
Some illustrators do marvelous job without studying at art school.
Besides college, I went to art school, and realized the school does not let me an illustrator.
Review and criticism by professional illustrators were helpful, and could get acquainted with some people who share the ambition.
But these things are not essential.

How long was it before illustration became your primary form of income?
After graduating college, about 4 years.

Could you describe your typical day?
Wake up at 6 o’clock, make breakfast, after seeing off my wife I go for jogging.
I jog 5 or 6 kilometers once in a few days.
Usually I work in coffee shop when no computer necessary.
After scanning the drawing, I work at home with computer to arrange and color.

What do you wish you’d know when you first started out?
The importance of preparatory drawing and sketching, which I am doing  now.
You can see my sketches here.

What’s the best thing about being an illustrator?
To be able to make people chuckle and giggle.
The Tower of Babel cannot interrupt me.
My wife envies me for no need to take a train to go to work, free from annoying relations with boss or colleagues.
She loves to see my friends who are also illustrators, and often says that she would never enjoy so much if she were married to a bank clerk, for example.

What’s the worst thing about being an illustrator?
Finance.
On graduating college, I was living with my wife and married 8 months later.
As she also works, we have no problem so far, but when we begin to think of buying a house or flat, it would not be easy to get housing loan, I imagine.

If you weren’t an illustrator, what would you be?
I have never thought of it.

Any other tips you could share?
I recommend to see many and various illustrations, and to draw many pictures.
